Pearl Earring, a Magic Story

Pearls fascinate mankind as rare commodities. When in the wild, only three or four pearls can appear every three tonnes of oysters.
And this is because the pearl is produced by the oyster to get rid of some external organism, or some foreign body that is inserted into the oyster.

To get rid of the foreign organism, the oyster begins to produce the nacre, a substance that is depositing on the invader and crystallizing in circular form. The layers of nacre accumulate and overlap with the previous ones, giving rise to this gem so sought after for adornment of earrings, necklaces and other feminine props.

Thus, from a healed wound, arises one of the most beautiful products of nature.

The pearl and its long history

This beautiful object and the way it is produced have always attracted people. Many think that the pearl is produced by pain, but it is not so. The pearl, or rather the nacre, is an agent that neutralizes the pain that the oyster feels with the invasion of any external object.

Owing to its rarity and beauty, mankind was able to produce it artificially by introducing into the oysters any piece of another oyster and cultivating the pearl which, being artificial, may not have the same economic value as the natural one, but whose beauty is the same as any Another produced in nature.Pearl Earring, a Magic Story 1

It is worth remembering some curious points of the history and the mythology of the pearl. So when you wear a pearl earring you will know that behind this beautiful gem, many cases to be reckoned with.

  • Being a product created to defend the oyster, do not think that removing the pearl from an oyster will kill it.If we remove a pearl and return the oyster to the sea, it will survive and, in the case of pearl cultivation, it can be used to produce more pearls.
  • The pearl is considered a gem, a gem. Because it is produced by a living organism, it is the only precious stone thus made. All other stones are the result of powerful forces of nature on minerals. Diamond, for example, is the carbon compressed to the maximum in the bowels of the earth.
  • The pearls may have several shades of color, and this depends on the color of the interior of the shell in which it was produced. We can find white, gold, light, dark pearls and even black pearls.
  • The ancient Persians imagined that the pearl was the tear of the gods, weeping for the sins of mankind. In Greece, mythology claimed that the pearls were born along with Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. Aphrodite, by the way, is represented coming out of a shell, as if it were a pearl.
  • Ancient superstition said that a person who had a pearl could see in it the signs of his own health. Thus, the pearl was linked to life. If a pearl were dark or opaque, its owner would also become ill. If the pearl totally lost its glow, it was a sign that its owner was going to die.Pearl Earring, a Magic Story 2
  • In the Middle Ages, pearls could only be used by the nobles, since they were a symbol of status and wealth. The bourgeois, new riches of the time, began to use pearls in their jewels and this was against the nobles, who forbade that ordinary people used the gem. This did not, however, prevent the jewelry becoming more popular and manufactured by freelancers.
  • In Japan and China there is the custom of grinding the pearls and turning them into powder, serving as a remedy for vitality. In India, pearl powder is drawn through the nose or ingested pure to cure various diseases, such as cataracts, ulcers, leprosy and even mental illness. As they are composed almost exclusively of calcium, however, pearls do not harm the human body.
  • The name of the most famous pearl in the world is Pilgrim.Pear-shaped and weighing 200g, it was found in the 16th century and passed through the hands of several European kings. The stone was presented to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton, his eternal lover.Curiously, the stone disappeared. It was only found later in the stomach of your pet dog.
  • Acetic acid dissolves the bead.If you put a pearl in contact with vinegar, it simply turns to dust. This happens because of its composition, 95% calcium carbonate. The same process occurs if you put an egg in a glass of vinegar.

With so many legends and truths, when you wear a pearl earring , remember that you have one of the most precious and charming jewels in the world.Pearl Earring, a Magic Story 3
